Homemade Whipped Body Butter- That I Never Make the Same Way Twice

There’s something special about creating your own self-care essentials—knowing exactly what’s inside and infusing every step with care.

This homemade whipped body butter is rich, luxurious, and deeply moisturizing without being heavy. It melts right into your skin, leaving it smooth, hydrated, and radiant.

Whether you make it for yourself or as a heartfelt gift, this recipe is a beautiful reminder to slow down and nurture your body—the way you’d care for something sacred. ✨

Ingredients

  • ½ cup shea butter

  • ½ cup cocoa butter

    • (increase this if you want a deeper, more chocolaty scent!)

  • ½ cup coconut oil

  • ½ cup fractionated coconut oil

  • (Optional) 10–30 drops of your favorite essential oils

    • please be mindful that citrus oils are photo sensitive and should be used with caution on exposed skin if you’re planning to spend time in the sun.

Instructions

  1. Melt the butters and oils
Add the shea butter, cocoa butter, coconut oil, and fractionated coconut oil to a heat-safe glass jar or stainless steel bowl.

  2. Create a simple double boiler
Fill a saucepan with about 1–1½ inches of water and bring it to a gentle boil. Place your jar in the pan and let everything melt together, stirring occasionally (about 10–15 minutes).

  3. Cool slightly
Once everything is fully melted, remove the jar from the heat and let it cool for about 5–10 minutes. You want it warm, but not hot.

  4. Add essential oils (optional)
If you’re using essential oils, stir them in now—after it’s cooled a bit but before the mixture starts to solidify.

  5. Chill until it begins to set
Place the jar in the refrigerator (or a cool spot in your home) until the mixture just starts to firm up. You don’t want it rock solid—just beginning to solidify.

  6. Whip it
Transfer the mixture to a bowl and use a hand mixer or stand mixer to whip for 3–5 minutes, until it becomes light, fluffy, and creamy.

  7. Store & enjoy
Spoon your whipped body butter into a clean glass jar with a lid. Store in a cool, dry place. If it ever softens or loses some of the “whip,” you can always re-chill and re-whip!

Play & Customize (My Favorite Part!)

Consider playing with the recipe a bit—there’s really no one “right” way to make it.

  • 💧 Try new oils
Swap the fractionated coconut oil for castor oil, jojoba oil, or another oil that feels especially nourishing to you right now.

  • 🐝 Play with texture

    • Add a bit of beeswax if you want a firmer balm-like finish.

    • Add a sprinkle of arrowroot powder for a lighter, silkier texture with less “greasy” feel.

  • 🍫 Deepen the chocolatey scent
Increase the cocoa butter for a richer, warm cocoa aroma that feels cozy and decadent.

  • 🐄 Add extra richness with tallow
A spoonful of tallow mixed into your butters can make the body butter even more nourishing, especially for dry or mature skin.

I never make it the same way twice—and that’s the beauty of it. Each batch feels like its own little act of creation. 🌸

I also make large batches at a time- so find your flow with the ratios suggested. You won’t mess it up!

A SELAH Moment

As you scoop a bit into your hands, pause.

Take a slow, deep breath.
Notice what you notice, and allow this body butter to bring nourishment to your skin and your senses. the way it melts into your skin.

Let this moment remind you that your body is worthy of care, attention, and tenderness—just as it is.

This is one simple way to practice SELAH Living: to pause, breathe, and remember that you are allowed to rest, receive, and be nourished.
